National Astronomy Day

NebulaHelp celebrate National Astronomy Day at the Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville, Georgia on May 7, 2011 from 10 AM to 11 PM. A full day of activities are planned so make sure to get there early so you don’t miss anything. Astronomy lectures will be happening throughout the day and planetarium shows will be extended to 10 PM. Guests will be able to make a UV bracelet, enjoy solar viewing during the day, and star gazing at night in the Observatory. Take a Star Walk to view the night sky with Tellus Astronomer David Dundee at 9 PM and 10 PM.

Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for children (3-17), $10 for seniors (65+), $8 for students with ID, FREE for active military with ID, FREE for Tellus members. The Planetarium is an additional $3 with paid admission, $2 for basic members. For more information, call 770-606-5700.

Mountain Laurel Hike

Mountain LaurelWhat a wonderful time to take a hike, right at the peak bloom of the Mountain Laurels! The City of Cartersville Parks and Recreation are offering this guided hike at the Pine Mountain Recreation area. The 2.34 mile hike leaves from the East Loop Trailhead on May 7, 2011, call 770-387-5625 to confirm a time. The trail is moderate to difficult on compacted soil. It will take approximately 2 to 3 hours to complete.

Participants should arrive early as parking is limited at the trailhead. There is overflow parking at the Allatoona Lake Resource Manager’s office. The hike will be cancelled if there is inclement weather.

Directions to the East Loop Trailhead are:  I-75 Exit 290, GA 20 east, then right at traffic light onto Spur 20. Go approximately 4 miles to parking area on right.

Terence Lonon in Concert

Visit downtown Cartersville, Georgia the first Saturday of each month through August, 2011 for some great entertainment. Terence Lonon will kick off the 2011 Summer Concert Series on May 7, 2011. He will be performing at the Friendship Plaza from 7 PM to 9 PM. Make sure to come downtown early to check out the hundreds of vintage cars, motorcycles, and muscle cars in the Tom Clayton Memorial Car Cruize and also to get a good spot for the concert. The car show will be going on from 5 PM to 8 PM. There will be food vendors onsite or take the time to enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants in the area. No outside coolers or picnic baskets will be allowed.
