Harvest Time at the Homestead

Volunteer some of your time on September 10, 2011 to help prepare Red Top Mountain State Park in Cartersville, Georgia for upcoming events such as Harvest Time at the Homestead, Halloween hayrides, and more. They need help getting the cabin prepared to host Harvest Time at the Homestead on September 24 and 25, 2011 from 10 AM to 4 PM.
Harvest Time at the Homestead gives you an opportunity to step into the past to experience some ways of life for people back in the 1800s. There will be demonstrators showing how different crafts like woodworking and soapmaking were done and how tasks like laundry were accomplished. A Civil War camp will be created so stop by to talk to the soldiers.

A Bit of British Comedy

The Pumphouse Players will bring A Bit of British Comedy to Cartersville, Georgia on September 9 and 10, 2011. Skits and jokes inspired by British comedians like Benny Hill, Fry and Laurie, and shows like Monty Python will be performed. It is sure to be an evening of silliness and fun. Kip Henderson and his troupe of actors are presenting this event at the Legion Theater as a fundraiser for the Pumphouse Players.

South Paw Fan Fest

Pam and Bobby Cox will be hosting the South Paw Fan Fest that will benefit the Etowah Valley Humane Society on September 4, 2011 from 12 Noon to 6 PM. This event is taking place at the Clarence Brown Conference Center in Cartersville, Georgia. Plaza Suite

The hilarious comedy, “Plaza Suite” by Neil Simon is being brought to the stage by the Pumphouse Players at the Legion Theater in Cartersville, Georgia on August 26, 27, 28 and September 2, 3, 2011.
The story is a comedic look at 3 different scenarios all taking place in the same suite at different times with different people. The play is being directed by Al Calsetta, Mallory Grantham, and Laurel Lowe.

2011 Pioneer Days

Join in the fun at Cartersville, Georgia’s 2011 Pioneer Days on Labor Day weekend. The festival will run September 2 – 5, 2011. It will be a great weekend of celebration with arts and crafts, musical entertainment with dancing, clogging, and singing, food vendors, and fireworks. There will be carnival rides and games for the whole family as well. Don’t miss the parade that will go through downtown Cartersville on Saturday, September 3.
Pioneer Days will be held at Sam Smith Park and the hours it will be open are:
Friday, September 2 – 4 PM to 11 PM
Saturday, September 3 – 12 Noon to 11 PM
Sunday, September 4 – 12 Noon to 11 PM
Monday, September 5 – 12 Noon to 10 PM
Admission is $5 for adults, children under 12 are free. You can purchase daily wrist bands for unlimited rides at the carnival for $20 per person per day. For more information on this event, call 770-974-9033.

Snakes at Red Top Mountain

Visit the Mountain Cove Discovery Room at Red Top Mountain State Park in Cartersville, Georgia on August 27, 2011 from 3 PM to 4 PM to see and touch three of Georgia’s non-venomous snakes. 2011 Mineral Symposium

Visit the Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville, Georgia on August 20, 2011 for the 2011 Mineral Symposium. The subject of this year’s symposium is fluorescent minerals. There will be talks throughout the day as well as hands on learning. All ages are welcome.
The lectures will be as follows:
11 AM - Luminescence: A Phenomenon of Beauty and Illumination by Dr. John Rakovan, mineralogy professor at the Miami University of Ohio.
1 PM – Why do Scientists Study Fluorescence by Dr. Earl Verbeek, Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, New Jersey.
2PM – Behind the Scenes at Tellus: Building a Successful Fluorescent Mineral Display by Tellus Museum Curator, Julian C. Gray.
3 PM – History of Fluorescent Mineral Collecting in South Greenland by Mark Cole, the Miner Shop, Dowelltown, Tennessee.
There will be Xploration stations set up to view the fluorescent minerals and learn more about the science behind them.
Admission is Free for members and active military with ID and regular museum admission for non-members of $12 for adults, $10 for seniors (65+), and $8 for children (3 – 17) and students with ID. For more information, call 770-606-5700.
